Congratulations to our SIC Service Award winner, Virginia Rose Meek! One of her favorite quotes from Winston Churchill encapsulates who she is: “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” Virginia Rose has definitely seized multiple opportunities in trying to make the community and world a better place—especially in light of being a high school senior preparing for college, captain of the varsity water polo team, and aspiring to achieve the Girls Scout Gold Award (highest).

Highlights of her achievements/plans are:

  • President of the Coronado High School Octagon Club which became the largest Octagon Club in California
  • 1 of 4 elected to the Junior Optimist Octagon International Board of Directors; under her presidency, they won District International Honor Club
  • Chartered the first ever Alpha Club at the elementary school level
  • 4 year high school varsity water polo player; captain of team this year
  • Working to achieve the Girl Scout Gold Award (highest) whose project is working as the Aquatics Manager for the Special Olympics Annual Spring Games
  • Inspired to pursue career in Criminal Justice to be an advocate for the helpless

Virginia Rose truly exemplifies the type of young women we seek for our service award—one who believes in the power of volunteer action and has shown leadership in her many efforts. We wish her every success in the future.
