Every year Soroptimist International of Coronado (SIC) honors an exceptional member whose significant contributions warrant special recognition. When Cherie Collins raises her hand to volunteer, SIC knows that whatever the job is, it will be done accurately, punctually and with a friendly smile.  Cherie’s generous nature, superb computer skills, attention to detail, and willingness to do the demanding data based jobs have made her a beloved and indispensable Soroptimist.

When she graduated from high school in Napa, California, Cherie enlisted in the Navy in order to fund her college education with the G.I. Bill. During her first tour of duty, in far off Meridian, Mississippi, she met and married her husband, Jim, a fighter pilot in the Marine Corps. After earning a B.S. in Computer Science at the University of Hawaii, Cherie became a reserve officer in Naval Intelligence. She retired as a Commander after 30 years of service. Her impressive resume includes a Master’s Degree in Technology Management, experience as a systems and an intelligence analyst, database manager, computer programmer, and instructor for intelligence computer systems. The Collin’s military careers took them to Hawaii, Dallas, Virginia, Germany, and San Diego, but Cherie always dreamed of retiring to live in a bungalow by the sea.  Fortunately for SIC that dream was realized here in Coronado.

Cherie was first introduced to Soroptimists by an article in the Coronado Eagle-Journal about the Annual Legends Luncheon that was to honor her friend, Sybil Stockdale. Before she was even a member of the organization, she volunteered to help with the invitation list. Inspired by the talented generous women of SIC and the importance of their charities, all designed to assist deserving women and girls who are often trapped in appalling circumstances, Cherie became a Soroptimist in 2007.

Cherie sees a need and fills it. Her contributions to the Annual Legends Luncheon are so vital that the event could not take place without her. She keeps track of invitations, RSVP’s, nametags, table numbers and assignments. During the lunch, she can be seen quietly working behind-the- scenes to ensure that all the details coalesce for a seamless successful event.

When Habitat for Humanity gave a presentation at a Soroptimist meeting, Cherie was inspired to strap on a tool belt and volunteer for their annual fundraiser, Women Build.  She will participate again this year.  When the SIC 2014 Women’s Opportunity Award recipient, a single mom with 3 children, moved into their own apartment, they had no furniture. Cherie took it upon herself to collect donations to help furnish the family’s new home. She truly is a “Cherie Godmother” and the perfect Soroptimist of the Year.
