Casa Hogar Sion was founded by Carmen Gonzalez in 1999 when she felt called to take in children orphaned by sexual abuse, drug addiction, prostitution, and those abandoned by their families. Carmen’s prescription for breaking the cycle was simple: love the kids, send them to school, and teach them to love Jesus. The orphanage is located in eastern Tijuana and currently is home to 60 children, aged infant to high school. Since 1999, over 1000 children have been served by this organization, which receives no funding from the Mexican government and yet receives children referred by them. Since 2006, the Soroptimist International of Coronado Club has supported Casa Hogar Sion with funding, food, cleaning and health care products, diapers, feminine hygiene products, clothing, and undergarments for the many teenaged girls who are moving into adulthood. In recent years, SIC has been the major sponsor for two young women to attend and graduate from university.
