Since founding Elleaire Fore Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, I have dedicated over 300
hours to raising awareness for Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP). HSP is a rare neuromuscular
disorder that progressively affects mobility by causing spasticity in the lower extremities. As the
condition advances, daily activities become increasingly challenging for those affected. This cause
is deeply personal to me, as my father, Dr. James Lyons, was born with HSP. Witnessing his
journey firsthand has given me a profound appreciation for the perseverance required to navigate
life with this condition.
Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia is a group of inherited neurological disorders that primarily affect
the muscles of the lower extremities, leading to muscle weakness, stiffness, and difficulty with
coordination and balance. Many individuals with HSP rely on mobility aids, physical therapy, and
medical interventions to manage their symptoms. While the challenges are considerable, ongoing
research provides hope for improved treatments and an enhanced quality of life.
I am Elleaire Lyons, a 16-year-old junior at Coronado High School. I founded Elleaire Fore
Inc. in 2023 to raise awareness and provide support for those affected by HSP. Due to its rarity,
HSP often goes unrecognized, leading to misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, and emotional distress
for the individuals and their families. Increasing awareness is vital to advocating for better research
funding, medical resources, and a broader understanding of the condition.
To support the HSP community, I have leveraged my passion for golf as a platform for awareness
and fundraising. My father is an avid golfer, and the sport has been a unifying activity we can
enjoy together despite his condition. As the Captain of the Coronado High School Varsity Girls
Golf Team and a competitor in individual tournaments across Southern California, I use my
platform to engage others in this cause. My father’s resilience in the face of HSP has been a
powerful source of inspiration for my commitment to this cause. Despite physical challenges, he
has remained dedicated to his career, embodying the strength and determination that define many
individuals with HSP. His journey has motivated me to take action, ensuring that others facing
similar struggles the recognition and support they need.
Since its founding, Elleaire Fore Inc. has hosted two fundraising events, raising over $15,000, and
all proceeds have supported HSP research. (The third event is April 27, 2025). In 2024, Elleaire Fore was named the third-highest contributor to the Spastic Paraplegia Foundation (SP-Foundation.org), an achievement made possible by the generosity of our donors, sponsors, local Coronado and the golfing community that believe in my mission. Currently, there is no cure for HSP, but through continued efforts, we can drive research forward and provide hope for those affected.
The Soroptimist International of Coronado Service Award represents the values I strive to uphold:
dedication, leadership, and making a positive impact in the world. Through my work with Elleaire
Fore Inc., I have demonstrated a commitment to creating lasting change in the lives of individuals
affected by HSP. Honoring my efforts with this award would not only recognize my passion for
service but also celebrate the resilience of a community striving for a brighter future. Through events, partnership, and advocacy, I am committed to making a meaningful difference in the HSP
community. Together with Elleaire Fore, I am driving for a cure, one swing at a time.
