Carolyn joined SIC in 2010 with the urging of Wendy McGuire. Since that time, she has held several board positions starting with volunteering to be one of our Directors, attending district and regional meetings as our representative, and reporting back to the club.

The following year she took on the position of VP of Programs for two years. She not only brought in an array of fantastic speakers, but she also introduced new ideas like having a meeting where three members introduced themselves to the program. This way we got to know lots of interesting things about each other.

She also rotated in programs about inspirational women of San Diego who had made a difference through their actions. These speakers included a female SPAWARS Navy Captain, a woman who founded the “Just Call Us Volunteers” kitchen that fed various at-risk groups in SD, and a woman who taught other women public speaking good habits and also founded a school in Africa.

One important and impactful program that Carolyn brought to the club’s attention and that receives funding to this day was Barrio Logan College Institute, as well as the Circulo de las Mujeres.

In 2015, CJ took a Leave of Absence for personal reasons and rejoined the club again in 2019.
In 2020, CJ was our Recording Secretary for two years, turning in impeccable notes for our records.
In 2021, CJ joined the Finance Committee and proved a valuable member of that Committee, adding her voice to the important recommendations and decisions of that committee regarding finances grants, and scholarships.

In 2022, CJ was elected President of SIC, and did a fantastic job! During this time, the club was still coming out of “Covid Mode” so required some creativity to get members to participate fully. It was a “Hail Mary” year, with no one stepping forward to be President, so Carolyn took a leap of faith and volunteered. She then used a winning combination of hospitality, cheerfulness, energy, organizational skills, and kindness to get everyone into the Soroptimist mood.

Membership retention was key that year and thanks to her spirit and hard work, many members who might have left decided to stay in 2022. She was a pleasure to be around and work with during what was an extremely trying year for most members.

In 2023, CJ volunteered to co-chair the Logistics and Hospitality committee, a job she loves to do. She is the hostess with the most-ess.

In March of 2024, SIC Coronado hosted the Soroptimist District III meeting at the Coronado Community Center.

Carolyn and her co-chair, Maryke Davis, successfully planned and executed the event for our club. Great Job!

Congratulations on joining other SOY awardees as our 2024-2025 Soroptimist of the Year.
